How do you make oat milk at home?

It seems like we’ve all (myself included!) gotten hooked on the Oatly oat milk. Oat milk is super creamy, and it’s also one of the most sustainable non-dairy kinds of milk out there.

BUT let’s be real, this oat milk obsession can get pretty expensive, especially if you go through your oat milk as fast as I do. I found a way to make a simple and affordable DIY version, so you can create your own Oatly at home. I know, I know – it’s not as frothy as Oatly, but it’s as good as it gets.

The trick to making the most creamy oat milk is the kind of oats you use. Steel cut oats will make the most nutritious and creamy oat milk. Our favorite oat brand is Flahavan’s. I love this brand because the oats are sustainably milled and non-GMO.

All you need is Irish steel cut oats, some filtered water, Himalayan sea salt, and a nut milk bag to strain the oats. You can also add a little all natural sweetener and coconut shreds if you’d like. Scroll down to see my favorite additions to oat milk.

The uses for oat milk are endless. I love using it my morning matcha latte. If you’re more of a tea person, try a splash of oat milk in your cup of tea. It’s also great in place of any milk (normal or nut-based) in baking recipes. Or you can go crazy and blend up your oat milk with turmeric for ready-to-go golden mylk!

It’s creamy. It’s sweet. It’s affordable. It’s sustainable. And it’s super simple and easy to make right in your own kitchen. Get ready to experience the most delicious and satisfying oat milk you could ever imagine!

DIY OAT MILK TIPS:

Because this oat milk recipe doesn’t have added oils, it will not froth as well as Oatly Barista edition. To create a frothy hot latte, I recommend heating up the oat milk in a saucepan or a steamer (I use one similar to this) or a sauce pan, then blending it with other ingredients to make it frothy.

These ingredients will help make your oat milk drinks frothy:

OAT MILK RECIPES:

You can’t beat an oat milk latte. Some of my go-to ways to use it are:

  1. To make matcha lattes
  2. To make Mayan mocha
  3. To make caffeine-free herbal adaptogenic lattes using the best coffee alternatives

Enjoy!

DIY Oat Milk Directions:

  1. Cover 1 cup of steel cut oats with filtered water and leave overnight
  2. Strain the oats
  3. Rinse the oats
  4. Load the oats into a high speed blender (I love Vitamix E3500 and the more compact and affordable Experian)
  5. Add 4 cups filtered water
  6. Add 1/8 tspn. sea salt, celtic salt or Himalayan salt (whatever you have on hand)
  7. Close the lid and blend it until creamy
  8. Strain the oats using a nut milk bag (psst: you can save the pulp for baking cookies)

Your oat milk is ready! Now it’s time to take it to the next level.

Reblend the oat milk with your choice or sweetener (I recommend 1 tablespoon of maple syrup), and customize it with:
