I get a lot of questions on where I buy my kitchen staples, and I’ve been on a mission to convert everyone to online shopping! The selection online is amazing, and you can get great quality, whole food products at better price, too. Also, buying things like spices, cacao nibs and oats in bulk definitely wins. Be proactive, shop now, and you won’t have to run to the corner deli and pay double the price for convenience.
After trying dozens of different brands for each of my staples, I’ve selected the best of best to use at the Breakfast Criminals kitchen. My criteria are impeccable taste, whole food ingredients, and ethical sourcing. These brands have passed the test.
PLACES TO SHOP //
Amazon is my #1 place to buy superfoods, cereal, nut butters, and most of other things mentioned below.
Farm To People Carries amazing small-batch, artisan foodie finds that support small farmers. That’s where I go for chocolate, granola, amazing bread and bee pollen.
Vitacost has a huge selection of all kinds of health-related things for your body, your kitchen and your home.
GRANOLA // CEREAL
Emmy’s Organics Raw Buckwheat Cereal: It’s the bomb! Crunchy, raw, superfood-packed, it’s the lighter, gluten-free, grain free version of granola. Perfect sprinkled on smoothies or even oatmeals. My favorite flavor is Cacao Coconut. Blueberry Cashew is also great.
Gigi’s Remix Superfood Granola: Raw, superfood, crunchy and so delectable (on top of being gluten free, added sugar free and dairy free), this granola homemade by Gina Ragnone (a.k.a. Granola Bitch) is my new favorite crunch. I love it when I know every ingredient in my granola, and it’s a rare case.
Paleonola grain free granola. My most recent find – it’s perfectly crunchy and so delicious. Breakfast Criminals pick: Maple Pancake variety.
Purely Elizabeth Granola and Ancient Grain Organic Oatmeal: Gluten free, refined sugar free granola that you can find at most health food stores in the US. My favorite granola flavors are Blueberry Hemp & Pumpkin Fig.
Seven Sundays Muesli inspired by New Zealand are a staple in my kitchen. It’s like oats, but upgraded–with superfood additions like chia, cherries, pecans and buckwheat. No artificial additives at all, only whole food goodness, unlike your regular pre-packed oatmeal mixes. I’ve been eating it as is with almond milk, making bircher muesli, or simply soaking overnight then heating up on stovetop and topping with fresh fruit. Also use them to make pancakes and muffins, plus there’s a sweet 1-serving box you can bring to work.
Le Pain Quotidien Crunola raw granola: Super simple mix of crunchy raw buckwheat, seeds and dried superfoods. Delicious!
NUT BUTTERS //
Dastony is my go-to brand when it comes to raw, organic stone ground nut and seed butters. Their superfood almond butter, Cashew butter, Pumpkin Seed butter, Coconut Butter and Rawmio Raw Chocolate Hazelnut Spread are the most tasty healthy indulgence you’ll ever drizzle over your smoothies.
Soom Foods Pure Ground Sesame Tahini is creamy and so delicious. Also, really healthy! Top your oatmeals, dress salad, and snack by dipping apple slices in it. You won’t be able to stop.
SUPERFOODS & SPICES //
Organic Burst is my go-to brand when it comes to superfoods. It is a London-based ethically sourced brand of affordable organic superfoods that ships worldwide. Here are my favorites from them:
- Maca – ancient Aztec superfood with earthy flavor that gives energy boost, regulates hormones and improves skin.
- Acai – amazon Berry that bursts with antioxidants and vitamins.
- Baobab fruit powder – immunity booster from Africa with six time more vitamin C than an orange
More Moringa Leaf Powder: Moringa Oleifera (Variety MORE Moringa packages), or “the miracle tree”, is native to India and has been used in Ayurveda for over5,000 years. Moringa leaf is packed with essential vitamins, phytonutrients, amino acids, and antioxidants, and has a slightly spicy taste.
Philosophie Superfoods: The delicious Berry Bliss, Green Dream and Cacao Magic are my go-to superfood mixes with only the best quality superfoods as ingredients. Great in smoothies, oatmeals and for baking. Use code “breakfastcriminals” for a discount!
The Natural Citizen Organic Greens is my favorite greens powder with only four ingredients: moringa, spirulina, alfalfa leaf and barley grass. It’s the perfect replacement of fresh greens in your smoothie. Try this green peanut butter smoothie recipe.
Frontier Coop: For bulk superfoods and spices, I go to Frontier Coop. Their products are ethically sourced and of impeccable quality. You can find non-bulk versions of Frontier Coop spices on the shelves of Whole Foods. Here are my staples from Frontier:
- Fair trade organic raw cacao nibs (the most fresh and flavorful nibs on the market)
- Ceylon cinnamon
- Cocoa powder
- Goji berries
- Chia seeds
- Turmeric
- Powdered ginger (to make instant ginger tea)
Sunfood Sweet Mesquite Powder: This South American superfood plant is a natural sweetener and smells like heaven. Amazing paired with cacao.
Gaia Herbs Turmeric Boost: This digestion and immunity boosting magic mix is simply turmeric, black pepper for better absorption (you can’t taste it), and prebiotic vanilla chai spices (organic cardamom, cinnamon, allspice, star anise, vanilla and holy basil). There are no sugar, flavorings or fillers, only pure spice goodness. Great in smoothies, oatmeals or even tea!
Sunbiotics Potent Probiotics with Organic Prebiotics, Vanilla: the most delicious way to take your daily probiotics! Add to smoothies or meals.
Navitas Naturals Lucuma Powder: Another natural sweetener native to Peru with a caramel-like flavor. Known as the Gold of the Incas in ancestral times, the fruit is yellowish green and egg-shaped with a dry, starchy yellow-orange flesh. The pulp of the lucuma fruit is dehydrated to produce the lucuma powder, which is rich in potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron, carotene and B3. A sweet powerhouse!
Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts: Add a spoonful of hemp seeds to smoothies, oatmeals or salads for a nutty taste and a healthy (and easily digestible) dose of plant protein and essential fatty acids including Omega 3, 6 (great for skin!).
PROTEIN //
Sprout Living Epic Protein is my favorite natural plant based protein brand. They use only plant-based, organic, kosher, non-gmo, whole-food ingredients that are soy and nut free. Their flavor combinations are the bomb, bringing together proteins from plant sources like sprouted brown rice, peas, pumpkin and cranberry seeds, with superfoods like lucuma and maca. Breakfast Criminals faves are Vanilla Lucuma, Chocolate Maca and Pumpkin protein. (Limited time: Get 15% off with code BFAST15). I aslo love their nutrition-boosting Sprout Mixes that you can add to smoothies, salads, oats and baking.
FROZEN SMOOTHIE PACKS //
Pitaya Plus raw dragonfruit smoothie packs (dragonfruit is the only ingredient) – source of Omega 3 and 6, antioxidants and minerals, this deliciously bright magenta superfood grows in Nicaragua and has a refreshingly satisfying taste, perfect for smoothie bowl creations.
Tambor Acai wild harvested açaí smoothie packs are essential in making delicious açaí bowls.
TEA & HOT DRINKS // Yogi Tea: A must-have in the Breakfast Criminals kitchen. My favorites are Super Antioxidant Green Tea, Blueberry Slim Life and Woman’s Energy. Harney & Sons Coconut Green Tea is one of the most delicious green teas you’ll find. It also comes in a beautiful pink tin that I’ve been reusing to store my assortment of tea bags. Matcha: As you might have noticed, I use matcha not only to make lattes, but also to get creative with my oats, chia pudding, and bliss balls. I’ve been using DoMatcha organic ceremonial matcha that my friend Kale & Chocolate gave me as a present, and I love it!
Essential Living Foods: Coco Mojo Energy Elixir is the most delicious whole food cacao you can buy. Great alternative to coffee and energy drinks (thanks to Amazonian energy-boosting guarana). I usually make my hot cacao with almond or cashew mylk and have it in place of dessert after my dinner.
If you’re into a healthy coffee alternative, also try Superfood Diet Support. I’m not into diets but this potion works magic! It’s a mind blowing yummy combo if cacao, green coffee bean powder (unroasted and more nutritious beans of the Arabica coffee plant), mesquite, maca, sencha, ginger, a bit of stevia & cayenne. I have actually noticed that it suppresses appetite naturally.
Coffee Not Coffee: This Aussie brand has incredible Detox Green Tea and delicious Slimming Hot Cacao, on top of coffee.
