I get questions about healthy eating in New York every day. The first place I always send my friends?
I’ve always said that sweetgreen has the best kale, and I stand by it.
Shaking up the concept of fast food, it brings farm-fresh, locally sourced ingredients to make the most nourishing, delicious seasonal salads and warm grain bowls. Think roasted curry cauliflower and brussel sprouts and sweet potato in the fall, and local watermelon, peaches and microgreens in the summer, tossed with flavorful dressings (like my favorite spicy cashew dressing that marries creaminess of cashews and tahini with a spicy kick.)
I discovered sweetgreen while on an adventure to Washington, DC in 2012. In that one weekend trip, I went back to sweetgreen 4 times. If I like something, I go all in. I found every opportunity to go back to DC to get my dose of SG for the next couple of years, until sweetgreen opened its first location in New York–at Nomad hotel (Broadway between 27 & 28th streets). Now there’s a handful of locations in NYC, including one by my house (win-win!)
When sweetgreen came to New York I did every Instagram move to become BFFs with the sweetgreen. After I reached out to the sweetgreen team and basically said “will work for kale”, they invited me to do a photo shoot for their blog. In it, we blended their philosophy of connecting people through food with my belief in loving yourself through superfood breakfasts. The result was pretty cool and featured the heart bowl in all its breakfast glory.
The day I was offered to become sweetgreen’s first unofficial ambassador, I was as happy as some are the day they’re proposed.
And it’s not even about the food. Yes, they do have killer Harvest Bowl, but it’s about so much more than that.
Keep your friends close + your farms closer.
It’s about gathering as a community around a table, sharing passions, following your dreams, reducing our footprint (everything at SG is compostable), and giving back (sweetgreen in schools is our homegrown program that educates kids about healthy eating, fitness and sustainability – use the sweetgreen app so that 1% of each purchase is donated to the program). It’s also about taking care of our bodies and the planet by choosing to eat locally and seasonally, and supporting small farmers.
At sweetgreen, you can make your own bowl or pick from one of the chef-created seasonal offerings. You can get your green fix at sweetgreen in NY, DC, MD, MA, VA, PH and CA.
I’m stoked for the upcoming launches of new gluten-free falafel made from scratch and steelhead (a sustainably farmed fish that’s higher in omegas than salmon).
Today Alexandra of inmybowl.com and I are giving away a $75 sweetgreen gift card + sweetgreen swag (the coolest totes and t-shirts) as part of our ‘25 Days Of Giving‘, don’t miss it over on @breakfastcriminals!
